    baglady,

I had a friend over who works with mentally troubled people, etc ( we watched the movie together )… and her analysis was heavily on the fact that the “mother” blew so much and destroyed so much in her life, that she was definitely going to take someone else down with her.

She pointed to her domineering personality and how she would berate Edie, in order to break down her psyche and make her feel like she OWED mom her life.

It was interesting to watch the movie again with someone who had that kind of insight.

She showed me a lot of signposts, etc.

    Awesome stuff

well i had/have a quite a controlling mother (though mines more manipulative than actually controlling…) so i can spot one a mile away!! Big Edie very good at it too….built Little Edie up just enough with a few compliments here & there to keep her wanting more…then suddenly struck her down with a negative comment aimed at keeping her where her mother wanted……….right there in Grey Gardens at her beck & call!!

I know what you mean Ron…i admire Little Edie so much for staying true to her unique staunch character through out her life…but its also almost overwhelming to watch…how much the mind can take…adapt to…but i think in the end its a message of inspiration & hope & of battling on to the very end with flair & laughter 🙂

I have just watched the documentary and the movie and am amazed how I hadnt heard of these two amazing women. How very very sad to see such beautiful women end up in such a sad situation.

What an interesting amazing story. Grey Gardens (2009) was so realistic in every way!!!! I must try to get to see it again.

I just watched grey gardens and was taken a little aback by the entire story.

I felt sad for Little Edie, and felt the entire situation was a shame.

It’s pretty amazing and frightening…. this human mind.
